The battle didn't actually start until halfway through, with the first half of the book covering the history of the castle and all the participants in the battle, in deep detail. The last 1/4 was references and footnotes, so you actually only get 1/4 of the book involved in the battle itself. That said, it is an excellent, in-dep||The Last Battle combines good history and good storytelling. Harding writes with the skill and grace of a novelist but also the authority of an historian who has done some rather remarkable research into a previously lost chapter from World War II's f
